Music Monday: The Spooky Spirit

T-Minus 3 days until Halloween! This is not a drill, people!

In honor of the impending holiday, I wanted to share some of the music that gets me in the Halloween spirit. Funny enough, this post could alternatively be titled “Music Monday: Classic Rock” because no one evokes an aura of witchery like classic rockers, apparently.

Seriously, every song on this list is older than I am.

Let’s get to it, shall we?

“Witchy Woman” by The Eagles (1972)

“Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac (1975)

“Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival (1969)

Fun fact about this one: About ten-ish years ago, I went to a museum with my dad and we watched this really psychedelic feature about astronomy. One of the songs they played was “Bad Moon Rising” and my dad was shocked that I knew the lyrics. “You know this song? I didn’t think you listened to old music like that.”

I love all things even moderately creepy, dad. I know you always hoped I’d grow out of that, but here we (still) are.

“Devil Woman” by Cliff Richard (1976)

“Season of the Witch” by Donovan (1984)

I honestly wish I could tell you why classic rock evokes a creepier/spookier vibe than more modern songs, many of which have considerably darker/creepier/spookier content. I think it’s the actual music. The instruments sound rougher, a little twangier. While modern “creepy” music makes me think about swaying in a club with other disenfranchised dark souls, classic rock makes me think about going out into the woods with an acoustic guitar and dancing around a bon fire with twelve of my closest friends.

And with this, Music Monday is officially closed! I’m almost sad; I’ve really enjoyed sharing some of my favorite songs with you. Maybe I’ll start curating playlists on YouTube or something. Maybe I’ll crawl my ass out of stone age and curate playlists on Spotify. Do the kids still use Spotify, or did I miss that one completely?

I hope you’ve enjoyed sharing in my random and eclectic music taste.

I love you all.
